WPT Renames Champions Cup After Mike Sexton

The World Poker Tour has announced that it has decided to rename the WPT Champions Cup after veteran WPT television commentator and partypoker ambassador/chairman Mike Sexton. The travelling trophy will from now on be called the ‘Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup’.

For 15 years Sexton was the voice of the WPT before he accepted the appointment as chairman of partypoker in 2017. His ties with the partypoker brand are however much older than that, what with his having been the face of partypoker ever since the mid-2000s and the famous Poker boom. It’s also this television presence, along with his friendly and charismatic demeanor that would eventually earn Mike Sexton the nickname, ‘The Ambassador of Poker’.

Highlight Of His Career

An enthusiastic and accomplished Poker player himself, Sexton in 2016 won his very first WPT title when he outlasted the player-field at that year’s WPT Montreal Tour. A regular World Series of Poker participant, Sexton in 1989 won his only WSOP gold bracelet when he finished 1st in the $1,500 Seven Card Stud Split event. He did after that, in 2006, go on to win that year’s World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions, but unfortunate for Sexton, the 2006 event wasn’t an official gold bracelet event.

Sexton, who in 2009 was inducted in the Poker Hall of Fame, is naturally over the moon with joy at the special recognition by the World Poker Tour. Previously of the opinion that being inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame would stand out as the highlight of his 40-year career in Poker, he now believes that having the WPT Champions Cup named in his honour tops even that.

Special Championships Appearance

Sexton, said WPT CEO Adam Pliska at the time of the rename announcement, represents and embodies that which the World Poker Tour stands for. Sexton’s classy approach at the table, his openheartedness toward fans when away from the table, and his contributions to the game, said Pliska, have all been of incredible and great benefit to the game.

Though by now retired from official Poker commentary, Mike Sexton will be making an exclusive return to this year’s World Poker Tour Online Championships and will be announcing some of the final table action. He will be joined by, among others, hosts Tony Dunst, Joey Ingram, and Vince Van Patten.

Already underway, the World Poker Tour Online Championships kicked off on July 17th and will run all the way through September 8.
