PokerStars Celebrates 13 Years Of Sunday Million
On the 14th of April 2019 PokerStars will celebrate the 13th anniversary of its legendary Sunday Million Tournament. The tournament has enjoyed a lot of support and success since a Canadian online player won the very first event back in 2006. The operator is understandably excited about the anniversary, and has announced that will be boosting the guarantee from $1 million to a whopping $10 million, with $1 million guarenteed to the winner.
The buy-in will remain fixed at $215, which is but a marginal increase over the January-announced $109 buy-in. When considering how much more is at stake, it certainly is worth a few dollars more.
The Road To Success
The tournament has come a long way since the March 6, 2006 inaugural event. Back then, the prize pool played for was $1,178,600, with the winner walking away with $173,844. More than 600 Sunday Million events have taken place since then, with the total prize money won over the course of the last 13 years having officially surpassed the $750 million mark.
According to Severin Rasset, Director of Poker Innovation and Operations at the Stars Group, the operator-group is absolutely elated to be a part of this milestone. But, says Rasset, the credit belongs to the players who have made the tournament possible, and week after week after week for the last 13 years. Rasset said that the operator hoped to see many of the regulator players present at the tables on April 14.
Last Year Did Not Disappoint
Last year was a big year for the tournament too. PokerStars celebrated the tournament’s 12th anniversary with two tournaments that each guaranteed $10 million. A Brazilian player took the first one in February, and was awarded a whopping $960,000 after having agreed to a split two-way deal.
Then, in April, it was a Dutch player who had managed to ace the Sunday Anniversary Take 2 event, leaving with an even better $1,000,043.
But the best bit about the Sunday Millions tournaments, is that the operator has made it as easy as possible to qualify to participate. Players can qualify for as little as $0.90 at one of the qualifying satellite events. PokerStars has said that it will soon be launching $15 daily satellite events. These will guarantee an additional 100 seats into the big 13th anniversary event.
