Poker World Goes Wordle Word Game Crazy
When thinking of Poker most don’t associate it with a word game. But that would be a mistake, because apparently Wordle is big with card loving fanatics. Created by Josh Wardle, the simple word-based game is going viral in a big way. Millions play it on a regular basis, which certainly isn’t to be taken lightly. However, Wordle also seems to have become particularly popular with Poker enthusiasts.
According to Wardle, a software engineer based in Brooklyn, it was never his intention to create a global phenomenon. Instead, he made the game simply to help his wife kill time during the world health crisis. However, when he decided to upload Wordle publicly in October he couldn’t have known how popular it would become. In just a handful of weeks the user base surpassed 3 million regular players.
How Does It Work?
For those that have yet to jump on the Wordle train, it might not be as complicated as assumed. First and foremost, yes, the app is free. Even more interesting is that the creator hasn’t even monetized the software. This means that the app can be downloaded, and enjoyed, without any built-in pushes for money. Everything can be played without ads, subscriptions, or anything of that nature.
As far as gameplay is concerned it works as follows. A 5 x 3 grid of blocks is presented, with each space containing a letter. The player must guess a 5 letter word in 6 attempts. If an incorrect letter is used, that block turns grey. If a correct letter is used in the wrong place, that block turns yellow. If a correct letter is used in the right place the block turns green. A simple yet engaging system.
Though, most interesting of all is that there is only a single word per day. Yes, everyone plays using the same word.
Why Poker Pros Love It
All of this is understandably fun, but why has a word game caught on so fiercely in the Poker world? It may not seem like it but guessing words within a limited timeframe is a deeply strategic affair. Professional players have quickly started honing in on the best approach, and even creating algorithmic guides.
The online discussions go bizarrely in depth. From citing the Wheel of Fortune strategy, to obsessively discussing the best approach, Wordle truly is an astonishing phenomenon. It is perhaps only a matter of time before a real money gambling game is designed around the elegant system.
