Ari Engel Wins Online Borgata Poker Event
There’s no keeping a good game down. And in a time that we’re basically all just fighting to stay alive and doing what we can to hold on to our livelihoods, Poker is showing its steel. Consider, for example, the annual Borgata Spring Poker Open. The event each year attracts a wide variety of players, amateurs as well as professionals, to the famous Borgata Casino in Atlantic City. But since this year’s event had to be called off due to the coronavirus pandemic, the situation called for a creative approach, and one that ultimately saw the event renamed to the “Borgata Spring Poker Online Open Series”.
The series can be played by all qualifying players resident in the state of New Jersey, where online Poker is currently legal. Currently underway, the event is being presented with the support of the partypoker US network and may be accessed online via any steady internet connection. A total of 17 events make up the series, and some of these have already been played, including Event #3, which was a $15,000 guaranteed prize-money PLO 6-Max Rebuy tournament event, and one aced by none other than online Poker enigma Ari “spinach_kale” Engel.
First Time For H-S Omaha
What makes Engel’s win even more pronounced is that the event won by the online master of Poker just so happened to be the very first high-stakes Omaha event ever to have been played as part of the series – and that goes for offline as well as online. The tournament managed to attract quite the player field for a high-stakes tournament and 48 entries eventually turned out for the fight. There were some late registrations and opportunities to re-buy, which ultimately led to 60 re-buys and 22 add-ons in total.
Successful entrants could be seen battling it out on the double, with big money at stake. But it the end it all came down to a head-to-head dual between Engel and a player who goes by the online hold of Flawlessbinkage. The latter initially positioned himself in the chip lead but eventually, after a game not all unlike a battle of tug of war, it was Engel who got to pocket the event’s 1st place prize money. And it only took all of 15 minutes for Engel to show himself the master of online high-stakes Omaha.
The Excitement Continues
The events obviously continue as there are many more to be played. The series will run all the way through April 12 thanks to a number of additional events having been included in the online series schedule.
