Plant-Based Meals Coming To KFC & Mary Brown’s

Eating plant-based is a thing. In fact, it’s become more than just a thing. And so huge has the demand for 100% plant-based become, that two of Canada’s largest “chicken food chains” have decided to expand their meat-free range of products.

KFC and Mary Brown’s have both announced collaborations with Lightlife, a local producer of vegetarian and vegan “meats”. Lightlife produces plant-based foods for plant-based diets. The company prides itself on products that are lower in cholesterol, saturated fats, and calories than real meat, but without compromising on flavour and nutritional value.

KFC Cites Huge Demand

According to an announcement on KFC Canada’s website, the chain is adding Lightlife’s meat-free popcorn chicken to its local menu – and for a limited period of time. This product is 100% plant-based and will according to the fast-food chain be prepared in specially designated fryers.

The chain does however note that the meat-free pops may be cooked using the same oil as products consisting of animal-based meat. According to KFC, the chain will allow its customers to decide whether they feel this to be a suitable option for them personally.

KFC stores in Canada began offering Lightlife Plant-Based Chicken sandwiches as part of their regular menu in 2020. According to the popular food chain, the decision to include these as part of the menu in 2020 had followed a super successful trial conducted the year before (2019).

During the initial launch-period, KFC reportedly sold an entire month’s worth of Plant-Based Chicken sandwiches in a matter of only six hours. So said KFC Canada chief marketing officer Samantha Redman. She explained that the decision to bring plant-based items to the chain’s menus in Canada had been the result of “extraordinary” demand.

Right now, the meat-free “chicken” burger is being offered at nearly 600 KFC outlets across the country. What’s more, the popular fast-food chain announced earlier this month that would soon be bringing Beyond Fried Chicken options to over 4,000 stores in the US.

First Foray For Mary Brown’s

As for the equally popular Mary Brown’s, they’ll soon be debuting their very first meatless chicken option ever. The chain recently announced that it will soon be offering Lightlife’s Plant-Based Tenders and Sidekick Snack Sandwiches as part of its regular menu at all 200 of its Canadian stores.

The decision is the result of the chain having listened to what local diners are saying about their changing tastes and preferences, explained Mary Brown’s president and COO, Hadi Chahin.

Sidekick Sandwiches are available in two flavours: Original and Sweet Heat. Customers have however been informed that both sauces contain egg.
