Poll Shows Canadians Don’t Need The Queen
Most Canadians believe Meghan Markle was treated in a horrible and unfair manner by Britain’s royal family because of the fact that she’s a Black woman. And according to a new Ipsos poll, many – if not most – would prefer it if the British Crown and monarchy had not formal role to play in Canada’s future.
Ipsos conducted the poll exclusively for a Canada-focused news agency following the explosive interview Oprah Winfrey had with Prince Harry and wife Megan Markle early in March. During the Crown-damning interview (read: exposé), Markle opened up about the constant abuse suffered at the hands of the British tabloid media, the racism experienced behind palace doors, and her inability to secure mental health aid at a time when she needed it most.
The couple also alleged that a certain (unnamed) member of the Royal Family had raised questions about the skin colour of the then yet-to-be-born Archie. Prince Harry did later reveal to Oprah that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip had not been part of the conversations revolving around race and skin colour.
Race Was At The Order Of The Day
According to the outcome of the Ipsos poll, at least 58 per cent of all Canadians believe that the Royal Family’s treatment of Markle had not only been negligibly unfair, but also driven by racial discrimination.
More likely to agree with this particular point of view had been women between the ages of 18 and 34. Black participants were majority supporters of this notion. As many as 98 per cent of all Black responders said they believed the family’s treatment of Markle to have been the result of mainly her race.
Also revealed by the poll is that 8 in every 10 people believe that the Sussexes had done the right thing by divorcing themselves from the Royal Family last year.
They’re Simple Celebrities
Most prominent, however, is that two in every three Canadians said that the Queen of England should no longer be having any formal role in a broader Canadian society. The common belief among Canadians is that members of the Royal Family are today nothing more than celebrities.
According to Ipsos, the 66 per cent of Canadians who consider the royals to be “simple celebrities” marks a two per cent increase when compared to last year’s results, and a six per cent increase over results published in 2016.
Issues of race and discrimination continue to plague Britain’s royals.
