Doom Game Review
Doom Game ushered in the popularity of thescience fiction horror themed, first person shooter video games. It is considered one of the most significant and influential titles in the video game industry. Originally released in 1993, Doom revolutionized PC games and has continued to hold up well after all these years.
Doom puts you in the role of a lone space marine stationed on Phobos, one of the moons of Mars, where a bunch of eggheads have been messing around with teleportation experiments. As luck would have it, those knuckleheads manage to open up a portal to hell, sending all manner of demons onto Mars. It’s up to you to blow apart as many demons as you can as you make your way through level after level.
The game is broken up into episodes however there is no real story to the game. Doom’s power lies in its ability to create hectic combat situations that put you up against overwhelming odds as you work your way through the 27 levels that compose the “original” trilogy of episodes. The objective of each level is simply to locate the exit room that leads to the next area, marked with an exit sign or a special kind of door, all the while surviving hazards along the way. Among the obstacles are demonic monsters, pits oftoxic, low ceilings that crush anything below them, and locked doors which require akeycard or a remote switch to be located. The levels are sometimes labyrinthine and feature plenty of items such as additional ammo, health increases and other "power ups"
The original game is divided into three nine-level episodes and distributed via shareware and mail order, The Ultimate Doom, an updated release of the original game featuring a fourth episode, was released in 1995 and sold at retail.
Being afirst person shooter game,Doomis experienced through the eyes of the unnamed main character. The game’s designer,John Romero has pointed out that this is so the player feels more involved in the game: “There was never a name for the DOOM marine because it’s supposed to be you"
Doom’s weapons are iconic, all of those classic weapons, from the chainsaw to the room-clearing BFG 9000, are present here. As are the classic level and enemy designs. There is a wide array of power-ups, such as abackpackthat increases the player character’s ammunition-carrying capacity, first aid kitsfirst aidto restore health and theberserk pack which both restores health and causes the player’s punching attack to deal enormous damage. In addition the player is assisted by nightvision, computer maps, partial invisibility, and protective suits that allow the player to survive in toxic acids.
Aside from the single player mode, Doom could also features two multi-player modes that are playable over a network.

The Good– The release of the Doom video game was surrounded by much anticipation. Open its release it was widely praised both in the press as well as among individual players. In 1996, Computer Gaming World ranked it as the fifth best video game of all time. The PC Gamer proclaimedDoomthe most influential game of all time in its ten-year anniversary issue in April 2004. In 2004, readers ofRetro GamervotedDoomas the ninth top retro game created, with the editors commenting: “Only a handful of games can claim that they've changed the gaming world, andDoomis perhaps the most qualified of them all.”
The Bad– As well as all of the acclaims and high praise that Doom received, it was also notorious for its high levels ofgraphic violence as well assatanicimagery, which generated criticism from a broad range of groups.The game also sparked controversy after a string of school shootings that where it was found that the shooters were avid players of the game. On the other hand, many professionals have proven over the years that violent outbursts are not the cause and cannot be blamed for violent video games.
Since its release, Doom has appeared in several forms in addition to the video game including comics, novels and even a live action film. The game influenced hundreds of subsequent first shooter games. Doom still has a massive fan base, it has held up well and still manages to be fun after all these years.
