Urban One The Favourite For Richmond Casino

Richmond’s lone gaming licence has a potential taker Urban One, a media conglomerate focused on television, radio, and digital platforms. Based in Silver Spring, Maryland, Urban One is on mission to become the preferred brand and most trusted source in the African American community.

In terms of its casino and gaming prospects, the media giant has now partnered with Peninsula Pacific Entertainment in the hopes of securing the first casino licence in Richmond’s 8th District. This district is reckoned to be home to mainly Black and Hispanic communities.

Peninsula Pacific Entertainment owns the Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent, Virginia.

Casino Will Create Jobs

The local community in Richmond’s 8th District is reportedly keen on a casino licence being made available in the region. According to 8th District Councilwoman Reva Trammell, a gaming facility is set to create jobs for locals as well as keep real estate taxes to a minimum.

Trammell also told a local Richmond newspaper that locals have voiced their support for the Urban One casino because, unlike previous applicants, it will be developed and located on land next to the headquarters of Philip Morris – and not dead centre in a residential neighbourhood.

Local voters will next November get to vote on whether to a single casino licence should be authorised for the region.

Bally’s & Cordish Also Interested

Two more contenders have been shortlisted as race-favourites for the lone casino licence. Bally’s Corp. and Cordish Companies have both been shortlisted as finalists. Their development plans have however generated opposition from residents over the fact that their plans involve erecting a casino in predominantly White-occupied neighbourhoods.

Bally’s Corporation reportedly has its sights set on roughly 61 acres of wetlands situated near Powhite and Chippenham parkways in Richmond’s 4th District. This district, should Bally’s emerge the successful incumbent, is roughly 65 per cent white. The gaming corporation is reportedly planning a $650 casino development for the region.

Cordish, on the other hand, will look to renovate Scott’s Addition’s former Movieland complex into a $600 million dollar casino complex. Scott’s Addition is Richmond’s 2nd District, with around 68 per cent of resident’s white.

ONE Casino + Resort

According to information released by Urban One, their ONE Casino + Resort would include a casino floor with around 2,000 slot machines, a premium sportsbook area, and 110 table games. The accompanying hotel will feature 250 rooms.

Also on the cards for the development are a theatre, several restaurants and bars, a television and sound studio, and around 55 acres of green space.
