Diner Staff Laid Off At Chances Kamloops

The traumatic effects of a global health crisis continue to take their toll on the lives and livelihoods of Canadians. The latest victims of the ongoing catastrophe are employees of Gateway Casinos & Entertainment’s Barside Lounge at Chances Casino Kamloops.

Staff employed at the indoor diner were recently informed that the operator has no other option but to commence layoffs due to recent re-closures of restaurants, bars, diners, and other amenities. Also affected is Gateway’s Atlas Steak + Fish in Cascades Casino, Aberdeen. Although the operator previously hoped to reopen the popular eatery, newly announced indoor dining restrictions have now restricted the venue to takeout and delivery services only.

The same arrangement will apply to Gateway’s Match Eatery diner in Aberdeen. Guests will however, in addition to takeout and delivery services, at least be able to enjoy some semblance of normality thanks to the venue’s outdoor patio dining space.

Layoffs Are Unavoidable

According to a recent announcement by the Canadian casino and entertainment giant, the prohibition on indoor dining, which is expected to remain in force until at least April 19, has left the company with no other workable alternative but to lay off at least 15 of its staff employed at the Barside Lounge at Kamloops.

According to Gateway spokesperson Tanya Gabara, the hope is that the operator will not be forced to lay off any of the 20 members of staff employed at its Aberdeen-based Match Eatery. The outside patio area, which will allow the eatery to continue to serve on-site meals and beverages, will hopefully allow the operator to endure the latest closures for the anticipated 3 weeks-long period.

Outside Dining Area A Great Help

The fact that Gateway’s Atlas Steak + Fish and Match Eatery outlets will be permitted to offer takeout and delivery services up until the anticipated reopening of the indoor dining industry by end-April offers at least some relief for the hundreds of restaurant workers employed by the company.

Since most casinos and even many of the dining venues have not been in a position to trade since March 2020, the company and its employees have obviously become desperate to return to some semblance of a normal working and business environment.

It is for this reason March 16 marked an especially joyous occasion, as it was on this date that the Match Eatery in Cascades Casino was finally permitted to relaunch its activities. The workers employed at the Cascades eatery are in a fortunate position due to the availability of the outside dining area.
